The CDC reported that this flu season saw the lowest hospitalization rates on record, crediting a new universal flu vaccine that targets multiple strains simultaneously.
The vaccine showed 89% efficacy against all influenza variants, compared to 40-60% for traditional seasonal flu shots. Hospitalizations dropped 73% compared to the five-year average.
“This is a potential paradigm shift in how we approach influenza prevention,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat. The FDA is expected to review emergency use authorization by October.
