Teacher Shortage Hits Crisis Level as Education Program Enrollment Drops to 30-Year Low

A nationwide teacher shortage has reached critical levels, with 46 states reporting significant vacancies heading into next school year.

The NEA reports approximately 300,000 teaching positions remain unfilled or filled by uncertified instructors. Starting salaries average $42,000 nationally.

“We’re asking educators to do more with less every year,” said NEA President Becky Pringle.
