Apple announced its newest M5 processor at a special event Tuesday, promising a 40% performance increase over the previous generation while maintaining the same power efficiency that has defined its custom silicon strategy.
The M5 features a new 12-core CPU design and an upgraded GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, making it Apple most capable chip for both professional workflows and gaming. The neural engine has been doubled to 32 cores.
Apple said the M5 will debut in updated MacBook Pro models next month, with iMac and Mac mini updates to follow in the fall. The company claims the new chips will deliver all-day battery life even under heavy workloads.
The announcement puts pressure on Intel and AMD, which have been competing to match Apple performance-per-watt advantage in the laptop market. Industry analysts said the M5 widens Apple lead in mobile computing.
